Mi Reflejo

I can really say that I am, somehow, blessed to be one of the students who were assigned to Ambulatory Surgical Center of FEU-NRMF because we were able to experience assisting and witnessing minor operations for the first time with kind, accommodating and approachable surgeons and scrub nurses. Before I had my duty in ASC, I heard a lot of stories which really scared me because my friends in other school told me that there are some surgeons and nurses in a certain hospital (definitely not FEU-NRMF) who are so strict that really traumatized them. When I heard their stories, a lot of questions were forming into my mind which contributed more into my anxiety. Thank God, my anxiety just popped in the air when I first set my foot in the ASC because contrary to what I was anticipating, the surgeons and scrub nurse gave us a wonderful and worthy experience in our two-week-duty in ASC. We didn’t just enjoy in our duty but we also learned a lot from the experience we had.

I learned that if you really want to be a nurse, you should be prepared physically, psychologically, and intellectually once you are exposed to an area or to a patient because you will never know what will happen next. I was shocked when a patient asked me what is the D5W for, and good thing I still remember what we’ve discussed in our previous duty that is why I was able to answer the patient’s question. We, as student nurses, even if we are still studying, should not show to our patients that we know nothing and are grossed to see blood because if we did that, it would scare them more. I learned that you also have to face your fear. I admit that I am one of those people who are really scared of seeing oozing blood and when I first saw an operation, even it was only a minor surgery, I was actually enervating! Now, I am thankful because I have overcome my fear from blood. Hehe… Lastly, I have learned to be more cautious of my health. I realized that I really have to know if there is something unusual growing in any part of my body so I can consult it to the physician immediately and further care should be done because if I do this I would be able to save my self from a more complicating disease.

Hay… I would never forget this experience because, aside from I can already stand seeing blood (hehe…), I enjoyed a learning experience which I am sure I can apply in my future profession… Hopefully!
