Petition against Desperate Housewives’ episode
filed under Nursecissism with

An online friend of mine texted me about a petition regarding the discrimination of Filipino doctors. At first, I was clueless about it. So I went to the site and learned that one episode of Desperate Housewives discriminated the said medical professionals. As one person working in a medical field, I was hurt!

I saw this link in GirlTalk where the whole issue was posted. Just take a look at this blog. There’s also a video there where you can watch the scene where Teri Hatcher said, “Can I see your diploma? I hope you’re not a graduate of some Philippine Med School…” (Not the exact words, though)

If you are interested in signing or participating in the petition, just visit this site.

Thanks in advance. :)

I was just disappointed because the DH staff could have done something about it. They know that it is not a joke but an insult. There are so many Filipinos in the US serving and taking care of their fellow citizens and this is the kind of words that they will return for the compassionate and holistic care the Filipinos have done for them.

Remember, they are getting a lot of nurses (and even doctors) from us. Without us, what would happen to their health care system?

We deserve an apology, no matter what.

ah nope. sorry, but i beg to disagree.

we don’t deserve ONLY an apology.

petition to suspend the show for a month will be more justifiable.

I am a Pinay! =) i got hurt with that episode where susan said.. “can i check those diplomas? because i wanna make sure that they’re not from some med school in Philippines.” I was like, wtf are they thinking for them to say that..lets say that this thing is fictional.. but even if it is… they should have been careful with the scripts that they make.. It pissed me off. But the thing is that, ABC apologized already.. our integrity has been hurt as well.. i know that. But can’t we just let go and move on since they have apologized already? We should just drop this because it’s not going anywhere anymore. They won’t suspend their show for a month for that.. I doubt it.. Isn’t a sincere apology enough for us to just forgive and move on? Moving on and forgiving doesn’t mean we’re forgetting what they did… but the main point is, they’ve done their part.. they’ve apologized.. can’t we do ours to? cause things will just get more complicated. I love my culture and all that. don’t get me wrong. We just have to learn how to forgive. You see, ABC is a very big network.. and they are not perfect.. they make mistakes too.. I think they deserve forgiveness din naman. =) have a gud day guys

Ugh.. idk why but for some reason when i heard about this issue, i wasn’t really surprised and enraged. I stopped watching desperate housewives a long time ago. Pero a lot of these shows always make racial slurs na hindi na lang din siguro natin napapansin. Oh well. Nakakainis lang because that simple statement can hurt many people’s impression on filipino doctors.

my opinion: everyone’s overreacting. sure, that was sucker punch to our race but the fact of the matter is, not all med schools in our country have high quality education and that recto exists.

so, yeah, go ahead and wage war on a fictional comedy tv show. but fix the problem as well.

Filipinos nga naman. So plastic. We complain about DH racial slur DAW but look at our own media, they depict as if people from the rural areas are hillbillies, they depict the indigenous peoples as ‘wild people’, the Visayans as made, the arabs are terrorists and people will bad smell, the chinese are people who speak broken english and tagalog.

Our ‘jokes’ are far worse than theirs!
