I was texting with my old online friend the other day when I found out that her professor now in one of her subjects in Nursing is one of my batch mates in FEU. Wow.
When I was in college, my classmates and I were talking about our plans after graduation. I once told them that I want to be a clinical instructor. Aside from my dream to be a teacher when I was a kid, I also have two other reasons why I want to be a clinical instructor. First, I want to be the clinical instructor every nursing student wishes for - someone that would inspire the students to do their best. And second, I want to be the exact opposite of our previously hated clinical instructors. Haha. That’s somewhat the same, right?
I had clinical instructors before who were really strict although I do understand the rationale behind. But I can’t help but comment that some of them are just out of the line. You get what I mean? They made us cry, suffer, and curse them. Despite those negative things that they marked in our hearts, I still thank them for imparting us their knowledge and skills.
On the other hand, I also had great clinical instructors that taught us not those things we read in books but also lessons we could apply in our own lives. They taught me to strive hard and to believe in my abilities.
I still want to pursue that plan. I actually had some friends who encouraged me to apply in a certain nursing school to be their clinical instructor but I declined the offer because of my priorities as of the moment. My plan is I would apply to be a C.I. when I get back from the US. It’s because I want to be more experienced and more knowledgeable when I teach. I don’t want to teach just because I want to have a job or I want to earn bigger bucks than the staff nurses here in the Philippines. I want to be a clinical instructor because I want to encourage and help the student nurses to aim high, and to be an effective, efficient and compassionate nurse.
So to my future students, watch out! =P
