Emergency
Whenever people ask me what area in the hospital I want to be assigned, I always answer ICU1 or Emergency Room. I believe that once I am assigned in those areas I would be able to gain more knowledge and skills. I feel like I am a level higher than the ward nurses. :D
This week (and also next week), we are assigned in ER. I am quite adjusting to my current hospital’s ER setting because compared with the ER in the previous hospital where I was trained, this is more action-packed. There are more patients, more cases and more excitement and thrill here.
I have always loved working in an Emergency Room because my analytical and critical thinking are always active. You are not allowed to act like a moron in the ER. You have to decide and to move quickly. No time for slow motions.
There are some nursing students, or even registered nurses, who do not like to be assigned in ER. Why? Because from their common reasoning, they feel pressured and they might panic. Number one rule is don’t panic; or else you might see yourself lying on one of the ER’s beds in the next minute or so.
I was so delighted that we got really busy today. We had a burn patient who was electrocuted from a welding machine. He was in pain because his skin in most of his body parts including his genitals was scalded. His pubic hairs were also burned. He looked so helpless while he was being treated. =( We also had a man in his 40s who had a blood clot in his airway and was seen cyanotic2 on his bed while sleeping. The doctors did their best to remove the clot and when they were able to find and to remove the blood clot through a laryngoscope and through suctioning, the man coughed non-stop like a person who was just saved from drowning. He even vomited blood with at least 45 degrees in angle that did stain my pants. 8| As far as I can remember, he was still being revived by the doctors when we left. The sad part in our duty today was that a 27-day-old neonate died out of dehydration. :( I know how tormenting it is for the mother since she took care of the baby inside her womb for 9 months or lesser than that because the baby looked premature with a very shriveled skin. I just wondered how come it never occurred to the mother to bring her baby as soon as possible since the baby is obviously dehydrated. Is it because of monetary reasons? But the hospital is free of charge except for the medications… So sad. :( May the baby rest in peace. I know he’s an angel now.
Everyday, there is always a different scenario being witnessed and handled by the ER nurses and doctors. Different patients with different cases and stories who have only one wish right at that very moment they’re inside the ER – to survive from illness/injury.
I hope someday, when I get hired, I’ll be assigned in the ER, if not in the ICU.

My name is Xyla, a 24-year-old Filipina unemployed registered nurse. I am a freelance writer for a nursing magazine of a review center. I aim to be a nurse leader in the future. With only 12 units left in my Master's Degree (Major in Medical-Surgical Nursing), I am ready to teach nursing students. During my past time, I kill Zombies, plant Cherry Bombs, Marigold and Melon Pult and make cheesy stuff for my boyfriend. I firmly justify that I am not too old for Glee-addiction. I hate prepositions. They make my life complicated.

That’s a very admirable characteristic of a nurse, ate Xy!:) you make me proud. i don’t see any reason why you won’t be able to achieve your goals, you’re very persistent and i can see that you work hard for them. God bless you and good luck!:)

Naalala ko rin yun experience ko na maginsert ng NGT. Pero unsuccessful ako. Tinulungan ako ng CI ko.
Yes, I attended the oath taking. Sa amin kase magulo eh dahil nga sa leakage leakage na yan. Sa PRC lang kame nagoath taking. Okay naman umattend. At least maeexperience mo yun kaysa hindi diba. ;)
