Kids on the Jeepney

When I was in grade school, I was never allowed to ride a jeepney nor walk home all by myself. Even though my school is just a walking distance from our house, my parents still hired a school service1 to pick us2 up for school and vice versa. So when I started going to college, believe it or not, I was so scared of commuting by myself! Aside from the university is kilometers and an hour away from ours, I wasn’t used to riding on a jeepney nor an FX3 on my own. I remember, my mom kept on texting me if I arrived safely in school. Okay, I wasn’t really the one who was nervous. Hehe!

I, then, realized that it was growing up.

I blogged about this because earlier this afternoon while I was on my way home, there were passengers on the jeepney whose age were like 8 or 10. I can not believe that they commute from their school to their respective houses without their parents.  I wonder if their parents forced them to do it or allowed them because they’re busy as hell to look after their children. I am not saying that their parents don’t care about them. There must be a reason. But you see, I worry for these kids. What if they got into trouble or accident? There are so many criminals and kidnappers who can fool this helpless-looking kids. Anyways, their guardian angels probably won’t let bad things happen to them.

On the lighter note of the story, I find them amusing. Haha! I told myself, “Daig pa nila ako!” In my opinion, these kids will mature early than those kids who grew up where everything they need is available. These kids saw the reality of life at a very early age unlike those kids who still complain for not having the coolest toy on earth.

While I was observing the kids during our trip, I can’t help but smile because of them. Can you imagine that they were just laughing all the time? They were pointing at expensive and luxury cars while saying, “Akin yang kotse na yan! Sayo yang hi-ace!” Probabyly these kids also have ambitions of riding on their dream cars someday. They maybe dreaming of getting off from a cool car for school and being dropped off by a very friendly chauffer.

Kids, don’t stop dreaming and working hard for your dream – a friendly advice from a stranger, who kept on watching you the whole time, named Ate Xyla.

  1. they call it as service instead of school bus because they’re not actually using a bus but a van or any other type of automobile and I used to whine that riding on a school bus was cooler than on a school service. Hahaha! []
  2. me and my siblings []

I’ve always wondered what it would feel like to ride a jeepney without my mom/maid clutching on to my hand as if someone might yank off my hand and kidnap me. Haha

Maybe their parents let them commute at a young age for them to learn and also to save money coz if they would accompany their kids, it’s another fare. I really admire kids who learn stuffs like that at very young age. Unlike me. haha. lol

I start going home alone when I was High School pero hindi pa din araw-araw yun kasi meron pa din ako sundo, its either my cousin or he boyfriend.

Aminado ako nang dahil dun hanggang ngayon hindi pa din ako marunong tumawid and I’m 21 na takot pa din ako.

To be honest, when I was in high school, my mom was very strict. They also had to fetch me kahit walking distance lang yung school. I guess my mother didn’t trust me as much as I want to be independent. She doesn’t want me to watch movies in cinema house with frends eh. Kahit nasa gitna nila akong lahat!

Ngayon college lang niya ako binigyan ng freedom. I love the freedom but yung ironic dun? I don’t go out much often as much as I used to want back in High School. Parang nung nabigyan kasi ako ng freedom the first time, I used it all up and now ayaw ko na. :P

Pero I still feel scared at times, I still feel like I don’t know how to get to my destination or what. Pero I still feel pity on children who commutes alone, kasi kung ako nga natatakot.. Sila pa kaya?

Haha. Pareho tayo, sis. At ang masaklap pa nyan, hanggang ngayon di ako marunong tumawid! Lolz. And also, whenever I see kids who are not afraid to commute, namamangha talaga ako. May good and bad side din yun mga ganong sitwasyon but well, I’m proud of them. (:

Ha! It’s good na parents are trusting and allowing their children na mag commute habang bata pa para masanay. Yung mga bata mabilis nang matuto and mag mature. Ma guide lang ng mabuti. For example, tell them to read books, trust them, etc. Ngayon pa nga lang yung teens mas marami nang alam na facts kesa sa mga parents nila. But then again, mas may alam pa rin ang parents sa buhay, alam nating lahat iyon.

By the way, random thought. I have a Philippine Constitution subject and it says 18 ang legal age ng voting kasi by then, marami na syang alam and matured na. I think ngayon kailangan ibaba na nila ang legal age sa 17! What more in the years to come! Baka 13 years old palang bumoboto na LOL!

    Much Love!

I started commuting when I was around Grade 3. And to think I’m smaller than the average 8/9-year-old (two years younger in terms of size!). It just started with short rides (school to father’s office) then naging mahabang biyahe na (pauwi). I can’t remember why it started. Mahirap pa at first kasi I was the only one in my class nagcocommute at that time. Buti na lang at nung Grade 4, may mga kasama na ako. It sure was fun. (:
