Sharps

My Korean students call their mechanical pencils as sharps. At first, I didn’t know what the heck a sharp is until there was a time that I got to understand what they were talking about.  Anyways, I just blogged about this to share another conversation between me and my funny student.

In the middle of our lesson, she gave me a mechanical pencil1.

Me: What is this?! (Yes, I know it’s a sharp but that’s what came out from my mouth first.)
Carla: A sharp.
Me: Yeah, I know. I mean, what is this for?
Carla: It’s for you.
Me: Really? Why? This is so cute!!
Carla: *smiling*
Me: Why? What is this for?
Carla: *smiling, probably thinking of words to say*
Me: Koonyang?2
Carla: Yes.
Me: Haha. Really? Thank you.
Carla: Because you always give me coffee. Teacher, tomorrow. One pack of coffee. Okay?

Patay tayo dyan.

  2. I don’t know how this is spelled in English but this means, just or for no reason at all. []
